Abstract

Aim: To explore the spermogram of infertile couples in Burundi. Patients and methods: It was a retrospective study for a spermogram examination in the context of either primary or secondary infertility in the couple within three months' period. Results: An overall of 41 patients from the four main Hospitals in Bujumbura were included. The mean age was 36 ± 3 years. A third of those patients had primary as level of education. The risk factors of male infertility were alcoholism (78%), erectile dysfunction (46%) and tobacco smoking (27%). The abnormalities of spermogram were leukospermia (66%), asthenospermia (63%), oligozoospermia (37%) and severe azoospermia (24%). Conclusion: The main causes of male infertilities were quantitative abnormalities of spermogram and associated factors such as alcoholism, erectile dysfunction and tobacco.
