Abstract

Context: Every human being has self-esteem. This varies according to several factors such as the individual's personality, environment, education, etc. Parental educational styles play an important role in self-esteem. Objective: to determine the influence of these parenting styles on the self-esteem of school-aged adolescents in order to help determine the appropriate parenting style for raising children and adolescents. Methodology: This is a quantitative study. The sample consists of 80 adolescents, including 41 girls and 39 boys enrolled at the Lycée du Saint Esprit, the Lycée Municipal de Cibitoke, and the Lycée Municipal de Kinama of the Ntahangwa Municipal Education Directorate during the 2024-2025 school year, aged 10 to 17. Results: A statistically significant link and positive correlation between democratic parenting style and self-esteem, while permissive, overprotective, and authoritarian styles are negatively correlated with self-esteem and a statistically insignificant link. Conclusion: The democratic parenting style is conducive to the development of positive self-esteem in adolescents, while authoritarian, permissive, and overprotective styles tend to hinder its development. This means that parents, educators, and the community must be supported in adopting balanced educational practices that can promote the development of self-esteem. We call on the Burundian government and education stakeholders to set up a parenting support program.
