When it was created in 1967, the East African Community was made up of three English-speaking members: Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Since 2007, it has admitted other members and continues to receive other requests, not necessarily English-speaking. These developments were accompanied by needs, in particular of a linguistic nature. In addition to English, the only official language, there is Kiswahili, a lingua franca. By questioning the Treaty, by analyzing certain aspects of the language policies of the member states and on the basis of the results of participatory observation and interviews at trade fairs, it emerges that this community still needs to update its language policy. Proposals are made.
