LITERARY TRAJECTORIES TOWARDS A HUMAN-FACED EMERGENCE OF AFRICA

The preliminary task that the African writer had given himself in the era of Negritude, had been to define African based on the discourse held on the Whites on the Black man: a sort of work of emancipation and refutation of racial prejudices whose major focus was Contradiction. As such, we have witnessed, as literary production of that epoch, not a ‘free’ craft that could be the embodiment of a people’s creative mind, but a writing of justification and refutation. Such tendency is still noticeable today in the African writer, to define himself not from his personal values, but from the values set up by the former colonist. It is therefore not a surprise to notice, at the level of poetic conception, a literature that ratifies consciously or unconsciously, a marginal position which the West has assigned the African in his discourse. The emergence of Africa with a human face, today, requires a new discourse, which will not be only a counter-discourse, but a discourse in which the paradigmatic rapports between the self and the Other would not suffer any form of complex, and in which the African would leave the margin to occupy his place in the center, not in order to ‘kill’ the other, but to assume his responsibility and invent himself the language of his destiny. The present article, which is both a critique and a meta-critique, draws its arguments from the published proceedings of the conference held in the University Saint Jerome (Douala) in 2014, to suggest, after the analysis of a selected African novels, new literary trends towards the emergence of Africa with a human face.
