STRENGTHENING FRENCH LANGUAGE SKILLS THROUGH AND FO RMATHEMATICS LESSONS IN THE FUNDAMENTAL EDUCATIONSYSTEM IN BURUNDI

Background: Context: To improve academic performance, Burundi has increased continuing education opportunities for teachers of Year 5, the level at which French language instruction begins. During these sessions, participants learned strategies for improving French language instruction through mathematics. Objective: to describe the use of mathematics statements through lesson observation. Methodology: to achieve this, a non-participatory observation method was used and the data was processed according to a predefined analysis grid. Results: a minority of the teachers observed manage to strengthen their pupils' French expression in mathematics lessons. They try to get the pupils who write on the board during operations or when identifying data and unknowns to speak. Few of the teachers visited require students to formulate answers in full sentences, while others do not follow the recommended methodological approach to improving French language teaching through and for mathematics. In addition, some teachers do not speak French when teaching mathematics lessons. Some mix French and Kirundi, while others use Kirundi, sometimes keeping concepts in French or coining words by combining phonemes from both languages. Conclusion: the results show some shortcomings among teachers. To overcome these shortcomings, they are encouraged to draw inspiration from the methodological guidelines in the IFADEM booklets available at the library and/or on the website www.ifadem.org.
